Sustainable Development Leadership Award to President Halonen of Finland
Finnish president Tarja Halonen was awarded the Sustainable Development Leadership Award for 2012 by Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh. This took place on Thursday at the 12th Delhi Sustainable Development Summit. President Halonen is co-chair of the UN High Level Panel on global sustainability and she is recognized to have an important role in the preservation of the global commons internationally.
In previous years the award has been conferred to Prime Minister of India Singh, Prime Minister of Japan Hatoyama and Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki-Moon. President Halonen showed her concern on implementation of the Rio agenda in her speech. She also highlighted the importance of empowering young people and women and its linkage to sustainable development.
