Finnode Japan - Cross- industry-innovation driven by Cloud and IOT: next generation ICT development and application in Japan and Korea

This project is: to understand a penetrance of ICT in daily life, to study technical challenges in Cloud and IOT,  to forecast trends in cross-industry-innovation based on ICT by referring living examples in Japan and Korea from two different perspectives: “manufacturing anchored” and “service oriented”.

Advanced utilization of ICT has changed our lifestyle and business rapidly and drastically.  It had changed telecom business and service industry in the past decades with a concept of ubiquitous computing.  A number of application specific computer resources (including digital appliances, handheld devices) had been developed, spread across daily life and connected each other via network. The objects are now increasing to link people-to-people as well as people-to-thing or thing-to-thing. IOT: Internet of Things is no longer a concept in the future, it is being built and utilized in the real world gradually but steadily: e.g. Ubiquitous Society in Japan, AToN- All Things on Network in Korea.

On the other hand, “convergence of computer resources on the network” is rapidly moving ahead, along with advanced utilization of broadband internet and networked computer resources. The scheme of cloud computing has become applicable to every networked device, and cloud has improved performance & quality of ICT applications by replacing application specific computer resources with software modules on cloud. Cloud-ization is now changing the role of networked devices from information processing to information handling, and sophisticating the process flow to be applicable for many different work process, business processes, production process as well as lifestyles.

All these changes are brought by “digitalization & networking”, however, it requires continuous technical development in higher capacity telecommunication link (e.g. cognitive radio), virtualization & load balancing of computer resources (Massively parallel processing), and secure identification of every device on the network (e.g. new generation network) in order to accommodate rapidly-increasing network traffic and computer loads toward cloud from countless terminal nodes. In addition, another IOT: Inter-Operability Testing needs to be conducted to every processes for the better service quality.

Then, once any processes are digitized and networked, ICT structuralize them and re-establish them into more effective ones upon digital domain, which create added value. There, ICT act as a coordinator of new business process, which is more than an enabler. Like internet unified many different media and communication technologies, digitalized and networked processes bond together at digital domain across the border of industry, and generate new ways of processing beyond original attribute. This is “Cross-Industry Innovation”.

All the processes in every industrial sectors are not necessarily digitalized and networked yet, but it is happening in the future. METI (Ministry of Economy,  Trade and Industry) in Japan has studied this phenomenon and set 6 prioritized segments of “Cross-Industry Innovation by ICT”.  In Korea, AToN Concept suggests 10 IT agendas.  The followings are considered as quite potential fields of Cross-Industry Innovation by ICT: i.e. Energy, Health, Robotics, Automobile and transportation, Agriculture, Information, Urban Infrastructure, Learning and education, Environment, and Safety and security.

Goal and strategic compliance

Project’s goal and its compatibility with the National innovation strategy and with the strategic objectives of FinNode partners, OSKEs, SHOKs etc.

Project’s goal: is following the latest trend of rapidly-evolving IOT and cloud in Japan and Korea from the viewpoints of “manufacturing anchored” and “service oriented”, identifying challenges of network and terminal technologies to accommodate growing demands created by IOT and cloud, and figuring out key success factors of Cross-Industry Innovation by ICT, in order to give a foresight to Finnish counterparts and to reflect findings to Finnish economy & industry strategy.

Compatibility: This project has compatibility with the concept of Finnish Information Society, and benefits innovation activity of research institute and university working on Information Society development, as well as economic & industrial policies.

Relevant Finnish partners: are TIVIT (New Media, Future Internet, Device and Interoperability Ecosystem, Cloud software), Tekes Ubicom program, Ubiquitous Computing OSKE, FIMECC

Main tasks, schedule, deliverables (signal session, client seminar, report etc.) and cooperation (with FinNode partners, OSKEs, SHOKs etc.).

This project will investigate a penetrance of ICT in daily life, technical challenges in Cloud and IOT,  trends in cross-industry-innovation based on ICT by referring living examples in Japan and Korea, especially in the fields of Energy, Health, Robotics, Automobile and transportation, Agriculture, Information, Urban Infrastructure, Learning and education, Environment, and Safety and security.

Basically, Japan part and Korean part  are conducted individually by project manager in the region. The basic research framework is to be shared by each implementer, however, individual approaches are to be taken according to regional specificities.

Main Tasks: This project consists of 3 main tasks:

1. Basic study on research subjects and hypothesis formulation to explain phenomenon:

Study on technology trend and roadmap, pilot projects, service case and business model, R&D activities, governmental plan, major players, etc.

 2. Detailed survey to verify the hypothesis:

Task includes:

•Define the drivers and importance of each subject area of Cross-Industry Innovation.
•Full-fledged survey on each subject area with reference to current status of cloud and IOT.
•Plan and arrange a study tour to Japan and Korea for Finish partners.
 3. Dissemination of findings of the project:

The findings from the survey are to be presented to Finnish parties at relevant occasion: e.g. seminar/workshop, signal session.

The dissemination of this project can also be organized together with Korea part.

Schedule: The progress will be informed to Helsinki/Finland from time to time.

•Project plan formulation and review:             Finnode Japan/Finpro Korea and counterparts in Finland, March 2012
•Basic study and hypothesis formulation:      Finnode Japan/Finpro Korea, April – June 2012
•Detailed survey and report writing:                 Finnode Japan/Finpro Korea July – October 2012
•Final report ready:                                              Finnode Japan/Finpro Korea November 2012
•Project result dissemination:                          Finnode Japan/Finpro Korea December 2012
•Study tour:                                                           TBD
Deliverables: Interim/final reports, study tour, presentation in signal session.
